Nothing says 'Christmas' like the glow of a scented candle.

Today we’re talking about the myriad of ways you can make your candles work harder for you.

What's your scented candle tally this year?  Given, received, burnt... not inconsiderable, we’d guess.

But here's the problem most of us have, can you actually smell the candles in your home?  If sales figures are anything to go by we should all be floating along in a heady fog of delicious sweet fig and tomato leaf.  Liberty of London alone reports a year-on-year leap of 27% in sales of fragranced candles and the offerings are ever more enticing, famous perfume houses such as Tom Ford and Vilhelm Parfumerie are adding exciting new candles to their collections this winter, so why don’t your candles always live up to the expectation?

While preparing to open our Colonic Hydrotherapy Clinics for the day, scenting odd corners of the Spa is essential to giving our clients the soothing and reassuring atmosphere they deserve and need.  Creating a signature scent for your home or office isn’t easy – it takes work!  Here are our secrets…

1). Check the ingredients.  Here at The Restore Juice Company we pride ourselves on delivering the freshest ingredients.  Our candles have the purest fragrance oils, they were designed by us to ensure that they have a lasting fragrance, because that’s what you want from a scented candle, right?  Our fragrances are hand-blended by our expert in North Wales, no watered-down fragrances or machines for us!

2). Where is it made?  We have the finest candle maker in the land, we are so passionate about supporting British businesses and endeavor to always source our products from the UK wherever possible.  Our candles are hand-made in North Wales at a family business sustained by generations of candle makers.

3). Location, location, location.  Did you know that the fragrance of your candle will rise? A quick win is to place your candles lower down and you'll smell them sooner.  The hearth of your fireplace works well & looks beautiful, especially in large rooms with high ceilings, which can be hard to fill.  Or place a hurricane glass with a lit candle at the foot of your staircase with a glass cylinder over the top to throw the fragrance even higher.

4). Perfect timing. Timing is so important, especially when you are entertaining or trying to create atmosphere.  Light candles an hour before your guests arrive, you can put them out after two hours as the scent doesn't get any stronger after this time.  The gift you get by doing this is the especially intense fragrance the candles release as they cool, though do let their surfaces turn fully liquid before blowing them out, to ensure they burn evenly next time.

5). Keeping up appearances. Trim the wicks of your candles to around 5mm between burns, this will limit the soot output and keep the burn even.  Keep the inside of your votive clear of soot. Try a dab of washing up liquid on a kitchen towel once your candle is out and completely cooled and solid.

6). It’s all in the numbers.  One candle for a large room will never yield a truly intense fragrance, we recommend 3-4 candles per room.

So, there you have it, our top tips for lasting candle fragrances.  Light your candles for a couple of hours every evening or every other evening is the first step to infusing your house with a beautiful scent.  Our secret weapon to really seal the deal is to supplement with room spray, reed diffuser or your favourite fragrance.

On our retreats we mist the bed linen and blinds with scent every morning and evening to ensure you feel the true benefit that fragrance can have towards the mind, body and soul.
We prefer a heavier scent with a hint of must for longevity, think amber, sandalwood and heady blooms such as jasmine and tuberose.  Citrus and floral notes need more warmth in the air to bring them out so save those for Spring, this is where you bring in your green tomato and mimosa.

Right now, for an intimate winters evening, try warm woods or reassuring lofty incense notes.  Precious woods help prompt the release of serotonin which will help balance moods and boost your sense of well-being, this is why they were used in many ancient rituals and ancient rituals are what The Restore Juice Company is all about.  We use our candles to complement our at home Juice Cleanses and Residential Retreats.  During these cleanses, mealtimes (juice only) require a particularly tactical approach.  We find that subtle spice or herbal scents work well with most foods and we use these to aid the detox process and balance your mood whilst you retreat either at home or on location with us.

However you use your scented candle, do use them.  Candles can be saved and stockpiled but they can also lead to a harmonious home with a gorgeous scent to match it when used regularly.  With the festive season just around the corner here's no reason to save them.

Get them out.  Light them.  Be cocooned.
